TOKYO: Japan’s Foreign Minister KAMIKAWA Yoko on Aug. 9 welcomed the Joint Statement issued by the leaders of the United States, Egypt, and Qatar on the situation surrounding the Gaza Strip.

Minister Kamikawa reiterated Japan’s commitment to the resolution of the Gaza conflict, expressing appreciation for the joint statement on negotiations over the release of hostages and a ceasefire. As mediators, Japan is prepared to present a final bridging proposal that resolves the remaining issues related to the implementation of the agreement.

The joint statement also underscored the urgency of the situation, urging both parties to resume urgent talks on Aug. 15 in Doha or Cairo to close all remaining gaps and commence implementation of the deal without further delay.

“Japan appreciates the vigorous diplomatic efforts made by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar to improve the situation and strongly supports the leaders’ joint statement and the efforts made by the three countries. Even to this day, many people who have been held hostage are yet to be released. At the same time, the humanitarian situation on the ground is becoming increasingly dire due to the prolonged fighting. The further destabilization caused by the spillover across the region remains a serious concern,” Kamikawa elaborated.

The Japanese Foreign Minister also emphasized the potential for a positive outcome, saying that Japan strongly urges all parties to seize this opportunity and work steadily toward releasing all hostages and a sustainable ceasefire.

In close coordination with the countries concerned, Japan will continue to reiterate its commitment to the cause, making persistent and proactive diplomatic efforts to release the hostages, improve the humanitarian situation, settle the situation early, and prevent escalation, Kamikawa said.
