Jennifer Lopez shares breakup song amid Ben Affleck divorce rumours

Jennifer Lopez has seemingly addressed the status of her marriage to Ben Affleck by celebrating the anniversary of her breakup song Cambia El Paso on Instagram.

“Happy Anniversary Cambia El Paso,” she wrote on Instagram, paying tribute to the single that was released back in 2021 in the wake of her breakup with retired baseball slugger Alex Rodriguez. 

Translated from Spanish (via PEOPLE and USA Today), the lyrics include: “He doesn’t deserve to have her in his arms,” as well as “Her life is better now without him…she doesn’t need anyone to be well / She does not fail, she does not fail.” The track also includes the lyrics, “She’s staying single. Now she makes love to whoever she wants.”

In a 2021 interview on SiriusXM, Lopez said the song was “about change” and “not being afraid to take the step.”

“Just take the step,” Lopez added. “Advance. Do what you need to do. If something’s not feeling right, whatever it is in your life, just make that move and dance.”

Lopez and Affleck started dating in the early aughts and were engaged in 2002. But the twosome buckled under the constant media attention and called their wedding off in 2004, with each moving on with new partners. Lopez went on to have twins with singer Marc Anthony, while Affleck went on to father three children with actress Jennifer Garner. Both unions ended in divorce.

“I think different time, different thing, who knows what could’ve happened, but there was a genuine love there,” Lopez said, reflecting on their connection in an interview with Jess Cagle in 2016.

After Lopez split from Rodriguez in April 2021, Affleck, who had broken things off with Ana de Armas, re-entered the picture for a second time with friends close to the duo referring to him as “the one that got away.”

Twenty years after they first got together, the twosome became husband and wife when they were married in 2022.

But in May, reports started to surface that the couple had hit a rocky patch with sources telling Us Weekly the pair are “having issues in their marriage.” 

The news came after an InTouch report was published in which a confidante declared the two are headed for splitsville after Affleck moved out of the couple’s Beverly Hills mansion.

“The writing is on the wall – it’s over,” the insider claimed. “They’re headed for a divorce – and for once, (Ben’s) not to blame!”

Since March, the pair have only been photographed a handful of times and have been dogged with questions over the status of their relationship. As she made the press rounds for her sci-fi thriller Atlas in May, Lopez, 54, shut down a reporter who tried to ask about her marriage.

One insider told PEOPLE in May that the two have cracked under the intense media scrutiny surrounding their high-profile marriage. Another source told PEOPLE that the pair’s marriage “is not in the best place at the moment.”

“They just have very different approaches when it comes to media attention. Ben hates all attention and it makes him very uncomfortable. Jennifer has always had a different approach,” the source said.

A second person close to the couple told the outlet that while Affleck, 51, appreciates his wife’s success, he doesn’t embrace her need to share intimate details from their life together.

“Even though he admires that about her, it doesn’t make him happy and causes stress in his life and then in hers. There is no question their different styles clash,” they said.

Late last month, PEOPLE reported that the Oscar-winning filmmaker had moved his belongings out of their shared home while Lopez was vacationing abroad. The mansion, which they purchased last year, is already back on the market.

“Ben continues to live at the Brentwood rental. He’s been there for about two months now,” another source says. “He seems okay. He’s been at his office every day and seems focused on work. He’s also spending time with his kids.”

According to the Daily Mail, Lopez’s family has urged the two-time Grammy nominee to break things off with Affleck for good. 

“Jennifer’s mom told her, ‘Cut your losses and move on to avoid getting any deeper in this mess,’” a source told the publication. “She told her that she’s wasted years believing that Ben was some kind of knight in shining armor. He was not the person she built him up to be. It’s taken too much of a toll on her and because of this she has lost sight of who she is and what she stands for.”

The two are still wearing their wedding rings, and a source tells Page Six that Lopez is still “smitten” with her husband. But after the singer cancelled her North American tour, she is spending her break with family and friends.

“Nothing can break her spirit,” a source said. “She wants to have a summer full of fun and laughter.”
