Jess Fox upstaged by younger sister Noemie in chaotic kayak cross heats

Australian superstar Jess Fox and younger sister Noemie have both progressed to the elimination heats of the kayak cross on Saturday.

Jess, who has already secured two golds in Paris, remains on track for a historic treble after comfortably negotiating her heat.

Added to the Olympic program this Games, the splash and dash sees three or four paddlers enter the water together before they jostle for positions through eight gates en route to the finish line.

The athletes wear protective equipment including mouth-guards and they can use their boats and paddles to push rivals off line.

Needing to finish in the top two to automatically qualify and avoid the repechage, Jess came second behind German Elena Lilik.

Jess lost a bit of ground during the eskimo roll — a 360-degree flip where the boat must be upside-down under the barrier — but was never in danger of missing the top two.

Jess is now straight through to the heats on Sunday.

“It was good to get out there and finish top two, that was the job today,” said the 30-year-old from Sydney.

“I wanted to try and be out in front but I caught up at the start and had to fight and push.”

And sister Noemie will also be there after she dominated her heat against tough opposition.

Noemie, who is making her Olympic debut, made a brilliant start to comfortably cross the line first.

And while she hasn’t had the same success as her superstar sister throughout their careers, she does have some bragging rights over her sister following Saturday’s action.

“I didn’t want to just be debilitatingly nervous … so I really was calm and collected at the start. Jess Just told me I looked bored, I thought I more focused. But I’ll have to work on my game face,” she said on Nine.

“It was a really challenging heat. I was looking on the paper yesterday and it felt like I had the hardest heat out there, but it kind of set the tone for the standard of the racing here and at least, you know, I know what to expect.”

Proud father Richard was relieved both his daughters got through and predicted fireworks should they meet in the later rounds.

“It’s relief. It’s round one and there’s a long way to go, but every race is a tough race,” he told Nine.

“And you know, they were training together. They did some head to heads this morning off the ramp and that was quite fun.

“So if they end up if they end up in a race, there’s going to be some fireworks, I reckon.”
