A Jetstar spokesperson said the Boeing 787 Dreamliner had suffered a “mechanical issue”.
“Our pilots requested a priority landing and emergency services met the aircraft as a precaution,” they said.
“Our engineers are investigating the cause of the issue.”
It was believed the plane’s front tyre exploded during take-off, however, 7NEWS cameras captured engineers flocking to the rear tyre which appeared worn out. The airline later confirmed one of ten tyres was damaged during takeoff, however, it didn’t burst.
According to flight tracking data the plane circled several times near Richmond in northwest Sydney before flying over water east of the airport and landing. The airport shut the runway for half an hour to allow for the landing.
7NEWS chopper images show the plane appearing to land smoothly. All passengers were reported safe.
