Jimmy Barnes says he was visited by ghost of late bandmate Steve Prestwich in new memoir Highways and Byways

Rock legend Jimmy Barnes has claimed to have seen the ghost of his late bandmate, Cold Chisel drummer Steve Prestwich.

The singer, 68, wrote about the times he may have been visited by ghosts in his upcoming memoir Highways and Byways, which is out on October 16.

“I had the dream after we all spoke about doing the tour, about eight months ago,” Barnes tells the Daily Telegraph.

“I woke up and I got out of bed and went downstairs … I didn’t want to go back to sleep because it was so real, I f****** touched him.

“I just wanted to enjoy being with my mate, because he felt so close.”

Prestwich died aged 56 in January 2011 after not regaining consciousness following a brain surgery to remove a tumour diagnosed two weeks before the operation.

He was the founding and long-term drummer of Cold Chisel and wrote the songs When the War Is Over and Flame Trees.

Prestwich was replaced by drummer Charley Drayton.

The revelation comes weeks after Barnes shared an update on his health following his own recent surgery and confirmed his plans to return to the stage with Cold Chisel.

Barnes cancelled two months’ worth of shows in August due to “unbearable pain,” with doctors advising urgent surgery.

Since then, the star has been recovering with family at home.

Now, he has had his PICC line — a thin tube inserted through a vein in your arm to deliver medications and treatments directly to the larger veins near your heart — removed, meaning he can gain back some normalcy.

Barnes said he had been living with a PICC line in his arm for the past six weeks.

“It’s meant that I could leave hospital and continue most of my recovery at home,” he said on Instagram on September 20.

“It’s been restricting and liberating at the same time.

“This part of my recovery is now over and with the help of (doctors), nurses, physiotherapists, family, friends, you guys and my Jane, everything is on track.”

Posing in front of a calendar with Cold Chisel dates, Barnes said rehearsing with the band again this week has “topped things off”.

“I can even get back behind the wheel,” he said.

“Aah! FREEDOM.”

Before the surprise surgery, Barnes appeared to be back to his best health — posting regular exercise images and videos — following open-heart surgery in 2023 when, in December that year, he revealed a bacterial infection he’d been fighting had spread to his heart.

“Despite everyone’s best efforts, the bacterial infection I’ve been battling over the last fortnight has apparently now spread to my heart,” Barnes said at the time.

“It’s infected an otherwise healthy valve that was replaced some years ago due to a congenital defect, so I’ll be getting open-heart surgery over the next few hours to clear out this infection and put in a clean valve.

“Obviously, this is going to take me out of action for a while.

“I know lots of other people are battling even worse things, but it still feels hugely frustrating.”
