Kane Cornes stokes unlikely war of words with Aussie cricketer Jake Fraser-McGurk

Outspoken AFL media superstar Kane Cornes has become accustomed to criticism from footy fans and pundits over his often controversial opinions.

But he may not have expected to cop it from an international cricketer.

Port Adelaide great Cornes, who is joining Channel 7 as an expert commentator next year, lauded his former club’s gutsy three-point win over Hawthorn on Friday night.

“2004 GF aside, the best win in Port Adelaide history. They had no right,” Cornes said of the Power’s win over the Hawks.

Declaring it the club’s second greatest win in its AFL history was always going to polarise.

The Power beat Brisbane to claim their one and only AFL premiership in 2004 — with a team that included Cornes — but have also played off in a number of preliminary finals and the 2007 grand final, when they lost by a record margin.

So, it was no surprise when fans voiced their disapproval, given Port Adelaide finished second on the ladder and beat seventh-placed Hawthorn in a home semi-final.

“They had no right winning a final after finishing second? Tell me more,” one said.

“No right? They finished second, were at home, plying against a team of kids. They won, as they should,” another added.

But no replies were as noteworthy as that of Australian cricket prodigy, Jake Fraser-McGurk.

The Victorian batting dynamo is over in England for Australia’s limited overs tour against the arch enemy, but he’s clearly keeping tabs on the AFL.

“No right? No right is starting 0-5 and making a semi final. Rest up,” Fraser-McGurk said.

Fraser-McGurk left the comment late on Friday night (AEST), just hours before he smashed a half century against England in Cardiff.

He hammered Sam Curran for three straight boundaries and later deposited two sixes as he went to his 50 off just 29 balls, only to get caught in the deep a couple of balls later off player-of-the-match Liam Livingstone’s (2-16) impressive spin.

Not even an astonishing five-wicket haul for part-time spinner Matt Short could prevent an unexpected captaincy debut for Travis Head ending in a huge anti-climax as England levelled their T20 international series in dramatic fashion.
