The Karnataka government has approved two major projects, the construction of an 18.5-km tunnel road and a 250-foot tall skydeck project, in state capital Bengaluru, to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 12,690 crore, and Rs 500 crore, respectively.

The Chief Minister Siddaramaiah-led state cabinet granted the administrative approval for both projects, including an 18.5-km tunnel road from Hebbal to Central Silk Board Junction on Hosur Road in Bengaluru.

According to a cabinet note, the original proposal was for a twin-tube underground tunnel, and initially, 11 high-density corridors were identified and a 191-km tunnel road estimated at Rs 30,000 crore was planned.

The tunnel road project will be implemented in a phased manner, and Esteem Mall in Hebbal to Central Silk Board Junction will be built in Phase 1.

An official said the Bengaluru Skydeck will provide a stunning panoramic view of the city to people, and the structure will have stores, restaurants and parking zones, boosting tourism in the Karnataka capital.

Talking to reporters, Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil revealed that the government is yet to finalise any agency to implement the project and tenders will be issued only after DPR is prepared and sent to a technical committee.

“After the administrative approval, a detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared and sent to the technical committee. Then, a tender process will be initiated. It will again be placed before the cabinet,” said Patil, adding that tunnel road is a “dream project” of Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who is also Bengaluru Development Minister.

Speaking about the Bengaluru Skydeck project, the minister said that a location for the 250-foot tall structure has not been decided yet as the DPR is not prepared.

“The location of the Skydeck project was not discussed at the Cabinet Meeting as the DPR is not ready year,” he said.
