Kate Middleton Nods to Princess Diana’s Red Catherine Walker Dress – WWD

LONDON — As King Charles III and Queen Camilla welcomed the president and first lady of South Korea in London, they were joined by the Prince and Princess of Wales, who turned heads with her head-to-toe red ensemble.

Kate Middleton, often a modest dresser, wore a shin-length red cape coat closed atop with a bow detail, with a short dress underneath by Catherine Walker with a matching hat by Jane Taylor and red suede heels.

Such royal functions require strict and respectful dress codes with the king, queen and prince dressed in a line-up of deep blues and navy.

The Princess of Wales’ red outfit was a slight nod to the South Korean flag. The other members of the royal family signaled the other colors of the flag in their outfits, too.

The princess is not one to shy away from bright colors, similar to the former monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, who had a signature uniform of bright block colors.

It’s a happy fashion coincidence the Princess of Wales chose to wear a red Catherine Walker number to Tuesday’s function, as a similar Catherine Walker dress from Princess Diana’s wardrobe has been recreated for Netflix’s “The Crown,” which returned to the small screen last week.

On Dec. 7, Jacques Azagury, the Morocco-born London-based designer who dressed Diana in some of her raciest dresses, is putting duplicates of her dresses up for auction at Lay’s Auctioneers in Cornwall, England, including a sleeveless red dress that she wore in Washington, D.C., to a fundraising gala dinner for the American Red Cross and a short red sparkly dress that she wore to the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice as part of the Biennale exhibition in 1995.
