Kate Ritchie hints at return to Home and Away

Kate Ritchie has revealed she is “absolutely” open to the idea of returning to Home and Away, the much-loved TV show that made her famous.

Ritchie, 44, has just landed a new role on the Fitzy & Wippa radio show, and on Tuesday the pair grilled their new breakfast co-host about the chances of her ever returning to Summer Bay.

“If Home and Away was going to wrap up and they asked you to do a final show, without a doubt you would do it?” Fitzy asked.

“Absolutely!” was Ritchie’s immediate response.

“But see, Home and Away is going to keep going for a long time,” Fitzy continued.

“What age do you get to before you go, ‘No, I’m not doing this. I’m not coming back at 80 years of age as Sally Fletcher, to do this one last time’?”

Ritchie said there was one person who would be able to talk her into it, no matter what age she was.

“I think it would always come down to the fact, regardless of how old I was, if Ray Meagher asked me to come back, to change the sheets in the caravan park, I’d be there hands down.”

Ritchie played Sally Fletcher for 20 years, appearing in the very first episode in 1988 and leaving the show in 2008.

Meagher, who plays Alf Stewart, is another original cast member, and he is still on the show.

Ritchie has become a radio personality since leaving Home and Away.

She was part of Nova FM’s national afternoon drive show, Kate, Tim & Joel with Tim Blackwell and Joel Creasey, from 2014 until early 2023.

This month, it was announced she was joining Ryan Fitzgerald and Michael Wipfli on the station’s breakfast show, now called Fitzy & Wippa with Kate Ritchie, replacing former co-host Sarah McGilvray.

The new gig comes after an extended break over the summer to recharge her batteries after a “hectic” 2022 “took its toll”.

Ritchie stepped away from her Nova commitments last year to focus on her health and wellbeing after a packed schedule left her feeling burnt out.

“I’m tired and I just need a break for a short while (to) have more time for me, and my family to re-energise,” she said in an official statement shared on the Nova website in October last year.

Ritchie added that she was the type of person to “invest a lot of emotional energy into everything I do”.

“My work, and my family especially, and the last few months I have been working on radio, I’ve been returning to TV and in my spare time I even wrote a children’s book,” she said.

“It’s time to recharge the batteries and come back fresh next year.

“And although it’s only for a short time, I will miss you all. I’ll see you in the New Year.”

In December last year, Ritchie was forced to release a statement after an Australian newspaper published photographs of her at a private mental health clinic in Sydney.

The Daily Mail Australia published images of Ritchie arriving at and leaving the facility, an act she described as a “shocking invasion of my privacy”.

Hours after the publication splashed the photos on its website, Ritchie released a statement on Instagram.

“As announced previously, I am taking a break until next year,” she wrote.

“The last year has been incredibly emotionally challenging, as well as a relentless schedule, stress, and a lack of sleep.

“I came to realise that this had led to an unhealthy reliance on alcohol.

“So I decided to use this time to do something positive by getting the help I need from professionals who specialise in this area.

“As everyone would understand, this is a very big step for me to take.

“I want to sincerely thank everybody who is supporting me.”
