Sisters Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner are no strangers to rocking vintage fashion. Whether Kim is wearing Versace from the 1990s on the red carpet, or Kylie some archival Dolce & Gabbana while on vacation, the Kardashian-Jenners are well-documented fans of throwback designs. (Following Kardashian’s Marilyn Monroe Met Gala dress in 2022, it’s now even a running joke that no priceless, rare gown is safe from her credit card.)
So it only made sense that at last night’s star-studded Academy Museum Gala, both Kim and Kylie would revive a throwback look—even if it turned out the two stars wore outfits from the same iconic 1990s collection.
That would be Mugler’s spring 1998 couture collection, a widely-celebrated show that showcased Thierry Mugler’s masterful corsetry and body-skimming silhouettes. Yet while Kim and Kylie both plucked looks from the lineup, each gave them a totally different feel. Kim—who has worn Mugler many times on the carpet, including at the 2019 Met Gala—slipped into one of his fitted white corset bodices, pairing it with a slinky white robe coat and nude PVC heels. It’s not the first time Kim has laced herself into one of his waist-snatching creations, famously telling Vogue of her 2019 Met look: “If I don’t sit down for dinner, now you know why.”

Kylie, meanwhile, chose one of Mugler’s less-restricting shapes—though her extremely fitted gown put just as much focus on the form. The nude slinky slip dress, with a black skirt overlay, was structural and clean, feeling just as modern today as it did back in 1998.
Clearly, the two sisters are both scholars of the Mugler archives. The question is: Do you think they fought over who got which look? Or did they dip into the archives together and each come out with their own wish lists? Whatever the circumstances, they delivered yet another one of their winning vintage moments.
