King Charles returned to public duties earlier this week, resuming engagements as he continues to undergo cancer treatment.
“Doctors are sufficiently pleased with the progress made so far that The King is now able to resume a number of public-facing duties,” a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said. “Forthcoming engagements will be adapted where necessary to minimise any risks to His Majesty’s continued recovery.”
Today, King Charles made a surprise appearance at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, a favorite event of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth. Upon his arrival, his niece, Zara Tindall, greeted him warmly with a big hug.
His appearance at the Royal Windsor Horse show isn’t just notable because of his ongoing cancer treatment, but it actually marks his return to the event for the first time in 45 years. He last attended in 1979, when he wasn’t a spectator, but rather, a competitor, showjumping on his horse Candlewick during a triathlon event.
When he was a child, Queen Elizabeth would often bring him and his sister, Princess Anne, to the event. During her lifetime, Queen Elizabeth never missed a year of the the show, even going in 2022 as she dealt with ongoing mobility issues.
King Charles joins a growing number of members of the royal family who attended the Royal Windsor Horse Show this year; yesterday, Princess Anne, Prince Edward, and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh were in attendance (and Sophie also attended solo on the first day). The Duchess of Edinburgh took style inspiration from her late mother-in-law, accessorizing with a headscarf for the outing.
