Lions TE Sam LaPorta returns to game after getting carted to locker room

It’s been a trying sophomore season for tight end Sam LaPorta so far.

The Detroit Lions star was carted off the field and into his team’s locker room after falling over a defender in the team’s game against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

LaPorta was on the field warming up for the second half, and was in on the first possession of the third quarter. But after running across the formation and blocking on the second play, he limped off to the sideline and was on the bench with an ice pack around his right ankle.

The injury occurred at the end of the second quarter on a play that saw Detroit score a touchdown on a trick play. LaPorta was blocking downfield for running back Jahmyr Gibbs and fell over his defender. He hobbled off the field after the play under his own weight but was brought back to the locker room on a cart right away.

He had two receptions for 36 yards at that point in the game.

LaPorta, who led all rookie tight ends with 889 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, has struggled this year and has yet to surpass 50 yards in a game. Coming into Sunday, he had six receptions for 58 yards and no touchdowns.

The 23-year-old was a finalist for Offensive Rookie of the Year and was named a second-team All-Pro last season.
