Man charged as another fights for life after fiery high-speed crash in Padstow

A man has been charged after a car he was a passenger in was allegedly involved in a fiery high-speed crash that left another man fighting for life in Sydney’s southwest.

A white Audi was allegedly seen driving at high speed before colliding with a silver Nissan Pulsar, causing the Audi to burst into flames on Davies Rd in Padstow about 10.40pm on Sunday.

Paramedics treated the Nissan driver, a 39-year-old man, and took him to St George Hospital where he remained in a critical condition on Wednesday.

“It looks like the silver Pulsar is turning right and, possibly due to the speed of the white Audi, a collision has occurred in the southbound direction,” Detective Inspector Jason Hogan said earlier.

Police were told the occupants of the Audi, believed to be three men aged in their 20s, left before officers arrived.

On Wednesday morning, a 21-year-old man, believed to have been a passenger in the Audi, went to Bankstown Police Station, police said.

He was charged with driving a motor vehicle during a disqualification period and granted conditional bail to appear before Bankstown local court on August 21.

“Police will allege in court the 21-year-old man drove the vehicle prior to the crash,” police said.

The Audi was not reported stolen but had recently been taken for a “test drive” and never returned to the business, police said.

Detective Inspector Hogan urged the remaining wanted men to turn themselves in.

“To leave the scene of any crash is not a good thing, and especially when someone is seriously injured,” he said.

“There’s a duty to all drivers to stop and render assistance as well as provide some details of who they are.

“Drivers need to be accountable for their actions, they need to slow down and they need to take the appropriate rest and drive within the conditions.

“Driving is a privilege, not a right, so drivers should be mindful of other road users.”

As investigations continue, police are urging anyone information, CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward.
