Man charged in Fremont fatal shooting that may have stemmed from jealousy.

FREMONT — A man once convicted of attempted murder as a juvenile was charged Friday with murder and other crimes in a Tuesday night fatal shooting at an apartment complex that may have been motivated by jealousy, according to authorities and court documents.

In addition to the murder count, Darreis Buckley, 26, who according to court records lived at the apartment complex where the shooting happened, has also been charged with unlawful firearm activity and possession of a firearm by a felon. The charges include several enhancements, including one alleging that he was on parole at the time of the killing.

Police had originally said that they arrested his girlfriend on suspicion of murder, but she has not been charged in the case, authorities said. According to Santa Rita Jail records, she remained in custody Friday afternoon.

According to court documents, Buckley admitted being at the scene of the killing, shooting at the victim several times and discarding the gun as he fled.

The man killed has been identified as Darwin Foster, 53, of Oakland.

The fatal shooting happened about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at an apartment complex in the 3000 block of Medina Common, where Buckley and his girlfriend lived, according to court records.

According to the records, Foster was shot in a hallway after leaving an apartment. Buckley is seen on video surveillance pointing a gun at Foster and then shooting him several times as he tried to run away, the documents say.

The records say Foster had a gun, which fell to the ground without being fired after he was shot. Foster was pronounced dead at the apartment complex.

The girlfriend was detained by police and initially denied knowing Buckley but eventually identified him as the shooter from the surveillance video, the documents say. She told investigators she and Buckley have been in an intimate relationship since 2021 and that he got angry when she was with other men.
