South Beach is an access point on Great Beach, also known as Ten Mile Beach, which extends from Kehoe Beach to the Point Reyes Lighthouse.

“Particularly on the Great Beach here, it’s a wild area of the park, where we tend to get a lot of rough surf at times, due to the prevailing northwest winds,” said park ranger Doug Hee. “Unfortunately, it’s not that unusual for incidents like this to happen. One precaution when you’re at the beach is to never turn your back on the water. There could be a possibility that a large, unsuspecting wave could come in. You should check the National Weather Service forecast for any beach or surf advisories prior to going to the beach. Even without advisories, it’s still potentially hazardous.”
