OAKLAND — A man was fatally shot Thursday night in East Oakland and a wounded man who showed up later at a hospital was arrested as a suspect in the case, authorities said.
Authorities were still trying Friday to confirm the identity of the man who was killed.
The shooting happened about 8:57 p.m. Thursday outside in the 2600 block of 22nd Avenue, a primarily residential area.
Officers responding to a gunshot detection system alert found the unidentified man shot. Officers tried to aid the man, but he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Police said an Oakland man who had gotten his own transportation to a hospital for treatment for a gunshot wound was taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting. The man was in stable condition.
Police are continuing to investigate the shooting but said that initial reports indicate the men apparently shot each other. It is not believed they knew each other and a motive for the shooting has not been determined.
Police said evidence recovered at the scene led to the arrest of the man who showed up at the hospital, but did not provide additional details.
