Manchester United has sacked manager Erik ten Hag following a 1-2 defeat to West Ham, dropping the team to 14th in the Premier League standings after just three wins in their last 12 matches.
New Delhi: Manchester United has parted ways with manager Erik ten Hag following their 1-2 Premier League defeat to West Ham, the club confirmed on Monday.
The defeat in London dropped Manchester United to 14th place in the standings, marking their fourth loss in nine league games.
“Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager. The Dutchman was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024,” Man United said in an official statement.
“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”
Ruud van Nistelrooy will step in as interim head coach, supported by the existing coaching staff, until a permanent replacement is appointed.
United has managed only three wins in its last 12 matches, including a 0-3 defeat to arch-rival Liverpool.
The 54-year-old’s position came under scrutiny repeatedly, especially after United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe decided to retain the former Ajax boss following an internal review of his role at the end of last season, which concluded with an eighth-place finish in the Premier League.
Ten Hag was granted a one-year contract extension until June 2026 following a surprising FA Cup final victory over rivals Manchester City in May.
Despite winning two trophies in his first two full seasons, former Ajax boss Ten Hag struggled to address many of his team’s issues from the previous season. He had staunchly defended his record in recent weeks, notably guiding United to end a six-year trophy drought by defeating Newcastle in the 2023 League Cup final.
