London-based designer Martine Rose is celebrating the performance of Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar (aka ‘The Hillbillies’) at Camp Flog Gnaw with a limited-edition collab collection.
The Martine Rose x ‘The Hillbillies’ capsule “blends the duo and Martine Rose’s unique style and creativity”, we’re told.
It features sports elements inspired by football, “giving a nod to UK culture”, which is particularly important given that the twisted football shirt is a Martine Rose staple.
The offer also features “playful motifs included in the graphics”, appearing on both T-shirts and scarves, with lyric references from Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar’s Grammy-nominated track The Hillbillies.
‘Martine Sardine’, is inspired by the Big Protein lyric, and ‘Best Dressed’ references past rave flyer graphics. Meanwhile ‘New Devotions’ is a phrase “chosen to capture the feeling of creating new memories at a concert”.
Cotton pieces are garment pigment-dyed “to give a worn-in texture and mood to the colour” while they’re faded out with fluorescent shades and deep blacks.
A “personal touch” comes from the ‘Handwritten T’, “where oklama handwrote the text and signed the shirt. The T references the poetry of the lyrics and adds a simple yet intimate connection to ‘The Hillbillies’.”
Rose said that “it’s an honour to work with Kendrick and Baby Keem. We wanted words to be the main focus of the graphics, choosing phrases that mean a lot to us”.
The collection was unveiled at Camp Flog Gnaw at the weekend with a limited run available to buy from Rose’s webstore as of Wednesday.
