Ajay Bhatt USB: There’s one critical piece of computer hardware without which would could not imagine any modern PC, smartphone, or virtually any other gadget which is powered any kind of CPU or chipset. This hardware is the Universal Serial Bus or USB, which has invented by an Indian genius, Ajay Bhatt, in the early 1990’s, leaving a long-lasting imprint on our digital lives.

Who is Ajay Bhatt?

Ajay Bhatt was born in Gujarat’s Vadodara city on September 6, 1957, in a middle-income family. Bhatt completed is early education in his hometown, and then earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in 1980. Later, the brilliant inventor completed his Master’s degree from the City College of New York, and joined Intel as a senior staff architect.

Ajay Bhatt career

In early 1990, Ajay Bhatt joined chip-maker Intel as a senior staff architect on its chipset architecture team and began his journey towards inventing several key pieces of computer hardware, including the  PCI Express, Platform Power Management Architecture, and his crowning achievement, the Universal Serial Bus or USB.

Ajay Bhatt holds a whopping 132 patents in the US and globally, however, its noteworthy to mention he has not earned a single penny from his invention of USB.

In 2002, Bhatt was felicitated with the Achievement in Excellence Award for his developing the PCI Express.

The invention of USB

From charging our mobile devices to transferring and storing huge amounts of data on our USB-powered storage devices, USB is perhaps most groundbreaking piece of hardware invented in the last 50 years which has become an inseparable part of digital lives.

The invention of this game-changing technology came in the 1990s when Ajay Bhatt realised the need for a universal standard for connecting computer hardware, which wasn’t as simple as it is today. Bhatt recognized the need for such a standard when his wife wife struggled to print letters for their daughter’s school project, prompting him to embark on a journey which would forever change how computer hardware connectivity works.

Ajay Bhatt – Awards, accolades

Ajay Bhatt’s game-changing inventions and contributions to the development of key technologies such as Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP), PCI Express, and Platform Power Management Architecture, have earned him several awards and accolades, including being recognised as an “Intel Fellow”.

He also received the Achievement in Excellence Award for contribution in the development of PCI Express. But it was his invention of the USB which earned him global acclaim and place in history.

The Indian genius and his team were honored with the European Inventor Award by the European Patent Office in 2013 for their work on developing USB technology, which has become a global industry standard today, connecting billions of electronic devices which was used in everyday life.
