Cracking IIT-JEE entrance test, getting a degree from a prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), and then landing a corporate job with a handsome paycheck, is usually the sum of the dreams of almost every engineering aspirant in India. However, there are few whose aspirations go beyond their initial success, prompting them to make hard choices to realise their ultimate goal.
One such inspirational story is the journey of IPS Rohit Bansal, an IIT Delhi alumnus who left his Rs 36 lakh salary job in the corporate sector to pursue his dream of cracking the UPSC Civil Services Exam (CSE) and after three failed attempts, cleared the test in 2022 with an impressive All India Rank (AIR) of 135.
Who is IPS Robin Bansal?
Born in a middle-class family in Lehragaga, a sleep little town in Sangrur district in Punjab, Robin Bansal excelled in studies since his early childhood. After completing his schooling from his hometown , Robin cleared the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) and earned his admission into IIT Delhi where he completed his B.Tech degree in computer engineering.
Robin’s father, Vijay Bansal, is an Economics lecturer, while his mother, Renu Bansal, is a homemaker. Notably, prior to Robin’s UPSC success, his younger sister, Eliza Bansal, had topped the AIIMS medical examination in 2018, achieving firs position in the exam.
After earning his degree, Robin Bansal landed a job at the reputed Samsung R&D Institute India-Bangalore (SRI-B) with a handsome salary of Rs 36 lakh/year (around Rs 3 lakh per month).

However, despite landing a high-paying job, Rohit’s ultimate goal had always been to enter the civil services domain and work for the people, and as such he made the difficult decision to quit his corporate job after a year-long stint and started preparing for UPSC CSE.
But success did not come easy for the boy from Sangrur as he failed to clear the UPSC exams in his first three attempts from 2019-2021. Yet, Rohit never lost faith in himself, persevered and prepared harder, and ultimately cracked the toughest exam in the country in his fourth attempt in 2022, securing an AIR of 135.
Speaking about his failures and ultimate triumph, Rohit revealed that self-study proved to be the key to his success in clearing UPSC CSE but also credited the role of coaching centres which he said helped him wrap his head around the ginormous syllabus and other supplementary reading materials which aspirants need to study to achieve success in civil services exams.
Robin Bansal opted for Indian Police Services (IPS) cadre, and is now an IPS officer, proudly serving people like he had dreamed about.
