Mike Tomlin sidesteps topic of potential trade for Brandon Aiyuk

Since reportedly requesting a trade from the San Francisco 49ers amid failed contract extension negotiations, Brandon Aiyuk has become a primary storyline ahead of the 2024 NFL season. But where the 26-year-old wide receiver will play this coming season remains a big question mark.

Among the most intriguing suitors, and most realistic, is the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Steelers have George Pickens as the clear-cut No. 1 wideout, followed by the likes of Calvin Austin III, Van Jefferson and Quez Watkins, among others. Acquiring a playmaker such as Aiyuk would be a welcomed addition, especially with the revamped quarterback room featuring Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.

While the Steelers haven’t openly addressed their potential pursuit of Aiyuk, head coach Mike Tomlin was asked about whether the team was actively working on adding another wide receiver on Wednesday. As Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk revealed, Tomlin “grinned” after responding to the question.

“I’ll let you guys speculate on that,” Tomlin said.

Obviously, Tomlin’s non-answer on the hot-button topic won’t leave Steelers fans jumping with joy. But if Tomlin’s body language following the response was any indication, it could signal that the Steelers are in the mix to make a big move for Aiyuk.

At the very least, it appears the New England Patriots are out of the running to acquire the 49ers wide receiver. According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, the Patriots and 49ers had an agreement and place, with New England putting a “large offer” on the table for Aiyuk. But ultimately, the receiver “did not show interest” in going to the Patriots.

Aiyuk’s future will be worth monitoring over the coming days and possibly weeks, but the Steelers are at the forefront of best potential fits and most likely suitors to acquire the explosive wideout.
