In a possible masterstroke by Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani, Reliance group led Next-Gen InfraCo (NGIC) is planning to bring a Jio-like internet revolution in Ghana, an African country. NGIC’s ultimate goal is to increase digital connectivity and make high-quality 5G services available across the nation of Ghana. For achieving this objective, NGIC has partnered with the Government of Ghana, Ascend Digital Solutions, K-Net, Nokia, and Radisys.

In a major development for the African nation, Next-Gen InfraCo. will start rolling out its first 5G network on Friday, Minister of Communications and Digitalization Ursula Owusu-Ekuful informed the press.

Statement from Government of Ghana

“We’re hoping that that would also democratize access to high-speed connectivity across the country,” Owusu-Ekuful was quoted saying in a report by the Economic Times.

“We know this will encourage businesses to sprout up in the countryside and not just in the big cities, and create economic zones, thereby providing more opportunities for entrepreneurs”, he added.

The economy of the North-west African country witnessed a robust growth at a pace of 6.9% in the last quarter, up from the 4.7% it clocked in the preceding quarter. The growth momentum was mostly fuelled by the mining sector, although, the annual growth rate hasn’t quite bounced back to its pre-pandemic level of 6% yet, for the country famous as Africa’s leading gold producer, the report said.

Role of Mukesh Ambani in Ghana

In a pivotal stride, NGIC secured the spectrum rights from the Ghanaian authorities for $125 million. This acquisition accrues them the exclusive privilege to establish a 5G network in Ghana for the imminent ten years. According to Owusu-Ekuful, this new development could pave the way for cost-efficient services. While NGIC provisions the network, other operators will lease it to disseminate services to their clientele, remarked Owusu-Ekuful.

Under the new deal that Ghana will witness, the Radisys Corp., a unit of Mukesh Ambani-controlled Reliance Industries Ltd., is expected to provide network infrastructure, applications and smartphones to NGIC.
