Back in “Mile High City” for the first time in nearly five years, Saturday’s UFC Fight Night event at Ball Arena proved to be an electric and thoroughly entertaining affair from start to finish.
Rose Namajunas further cemented her standing as a serious threat in the flyweight division on Saturday night, closing out the UFC’s return to her adopted hometown of Denver with a dominant effort against Tracy Cortez.
The two-time former strawweight champion put her complete skill set on display on Saturday, dropping Cortez with a left hook in the first, landing a variety of kicks throughout, and grappling effectively in stretches when she looked to take the fight to the canvas. Cortez, who took the fight on short notice, replacing Maycee Barber, was game throughout, but just didn’t have the answers for the assortment of questions Namajunas continued to pose to her throughout the contest.
After dropping her divisional debut to top contender Manon Fiorot last September in Paris, “Thug Rose” has now earned consecutive wins over ranked opponents in 2024, adding this win over Cortez to her earlier triumph over Amanda Ribas. There is finally some much-needed movement in the flyweight division, and this effort should ensure that Namajunas remains in the thick of the title chase as we progress towards the championship trilogy bout between Alexa Grasso and Valentina Shevchenko.
Muslim Salikhov landed on the fortunate side of the split decision verdict in his co-main event clash with fellow welterweight veteran Santiago Ponzinibbio. Contested largely on the feet, the 40-year-old Russian got the better of the striking exchanges in the eyes of two of the three officials, halting a two-fight skid and registering his first win since November 2022 by edging out “The Argentine Dagger” on the scorecards.
Jean Silva continues to make his case for 2024 Rookie of the Year in the UFC, collecting his second win in three weeks and third victory of the year with a third-0round stoppage victory over Drew Dober in an all-action slobber knocker midway through the main card.
Silva, who stepped in on short notice, up a division just a couple weeks after defeating Charles Jourdain at UFC 303, opened a small cut over Dober’s right eye in the first with a series of check hooks, and continued targeting the area throughout the fight. It worsened as the rounds progressed, and after an exchange of fire early in the third, the bout was paused and ultimately waved off when it was determined the cut was too bad for Dober to continue.
The 27-year-old Silva has quickly established himself as a must-watch addition to the roster, and should have plenty of options going forward after jumping in at lightweight and stopping a respected veteran like Dober on short notice.
Julian Erosa picked up his second straight first-round submission win by guillotine choke on Saturday night, submitting streaking prospect Christian Rodriguez in the waning moments of the opening round.
As is always the case when Erosa is involved, the fight was electric from the outset, with both men wilfully standing in the pocket and slinging hands, with Rodriguez getting the better of things early. But the Vegas-based veteran stood his ground, fired back, and after taking Rodriguez to the canvas in the back half of the round, Erosa clamped onto the fight-ending choke in the midst of a scramble.
Currently in his third tour of duty with the UFC, Erosa is a perfect example of the kind of highly entertaining, action fighter every division needs. He’s now 7-3 over his last 10 fights, and should continue to deliver absolute barnburners, win or lose, every time out.
The main card opened with chaos and controversy, as the explosive middleweight clash between Colorado representatives Abdul Razak Alhassan and Cody Brundage was ruled a no-contest after Alhassan landed several elbows to the back of Brundage’s head, rendering him unable to continue.

Brundage shot immediately to start the fight and Alhassan responded by tagging him with several “Travis Browne elbows” to the side of the head, named after the Hawaiian heavyweight who used them effectively throughout his UFC career. But in the ensuing movements, as Brundage looked to avoid further punishment, Alhassan connected to the back of the head, resulting in the action being paused and the fight ultimately being waved off.

The 33-year-old from St. Louis started well, but allowed Van to grab control of the fight in the second half of the first round, foregoing his offensive pressure to look for counters as the youngster from Texas served as the aggressor. In all three rounds, the ranked flyweight was the more physical, more effective of the two, using her superior size and the benefit of a full camp wrapped at elevation in Denver to control things against Kline. The 35-year-old fights with a different level of tenacity and genuine meanness than many of her contemporaries, which makes her must-see TV every time out and one to keep watching as she continues to garner more experience and level up her game inside the Octagon.
The Canadian was quick to offer up a callout following her victory as well, telling Sportsnet’s Aaron Bronsteter she’d welcome the chance to share the Octagon with Kline’s teammate and top-ranked flyweight Erin Blanchfield, who was in the opposing corner on Saturday night. Though she may not get her wish to fight Blanchfield, Jasudavicius should get an opportunity to face another ranked opponent next time out, especially after having been scheduled to fight forward in the rankings against Viviane Araujo in Denver before the Brazilian was forced out late with an injury.
If people weren’t paying attention to Montel Jackson already, there will be now, as the DWCS Season 2 grad collected an 18-second knockout win over Da’Mon Blackshear to extend his winning streak to five with a second straight first-round knockout win. Jackson reached the UFC after less than a year as a professional and has gone 8-2 since, establishing himself as one of the most intriguing dark horses in the talent-rich 135-pound weight class.
