It’s the rumour that just won’t go away.
Ever since Sam Kerr’s American footballer girlfriend Kristie Mewis appeared in a promotional video sporting a new shiny piece of jewellery on her finger, fans have been convinced it means the duo are engaged.
While the Matildas’ star and her partner have remained tight-lipped over the frenzy, a new snap shared to Kerr’s Instagram page has only added fuel to the fire.

In it, Kerr and Mewis could be seen posing for a bathroom selfie – and strikingly both of Mewis’s hands were on display, with that sparkling jewel there on her ring finger for all to see.
Kerr simply captioned her snap “September people x”, to wish Mewis responded: “Lushhhh” and “Ily”, an abbreviated form of “I love you”.
And the combo had fans convinced this was a “soft launch” of the major relationship news.
“Ahahah the ring. Congrats Sam,” one viewer posted.
“Not me zooming in on the hand,” another confessed.
“I think we should say congratulations. So happyyy for youuu,” another added.
“Do I respect the soft launch? Yes. Do I want a big gushy post? Also yes,” one more fan weighed in.
It’s been a busy time for the couple who celebrated Kerr’s 30th birthday in September after returning to their separate bases following a break at the end of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Mewis headed back to her home country to link up with Gotham FC in New Jersey while Kerr returned to England for pre-season training with Chelsea.
But despite their individual commitments, it’s clear the pair has found plenty of time to reconnect over the last few weeks.
Engagement speculation first ran rife when Mewis featured in a promotional clip for the EA FC 24 video game, with a jewel on her ring finger.
The couple had not made any announcements but that didn’t stop fans asking questions.
“Omg is Kristie wearing an engagement ring??” one wrote at the time.
Another said: “Not the ROCK.”
The couple were first photographed together in 2021 at the Tokyo Olympics after the US defeated Australia in the semi-finals.
Less than a week later, they went ‘Insta official’ when Kerr posted a new photo.
Since then they’ve become a ‘power couple’ for the LGBTQI+ community.
“We’re not private people,” Kerr previously told Gaffer.
“I like sharing my story. I like sharing who I am outside of football.”
Despite the “tough” demands of their sporting careers, the couple made time to have dinner together, FaceTime when they were apart, and sit down to watch TV shows together, Kerr said.
“I think the thing that keeps us going is that we can see an end point (to professional playing),” she explained.
“We both just want each other to do so well in our careers.
“I don’t think you could be in a long-distance relationship with someone who didn’t get the sport.”
Mewis, 32, told the publication she hoped that being an “out and proud” couple would help others to feel proud and comfortable in their sexuality.
“I think just being out and being two girls in love, I think if we can change one or two people’s lives, and the way that they feel about each other and how comfortable they feel, then that means a lot to me,” she said.
“I love to share my relationship on social media.”
