North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson engulfed in fresh AFL scandal

The AFL is once again investigating an incident involving North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson.

Clarkson has been accused of using offensive language that was audible to others, including match officials.

The vile language followed an umpire’s decision in the third quarter of North Melbourne’s 59-point loss to Port Adelaide.

North Melbourne are aware of the situation and an AFL spokesperson has confirmed the League are looking into it.

It was suggested by one AFL journalist that the abuse may have been directed at the umpires’ bench.

The incident comes after Clarkson was found guilty of conduct unbecoming in the pre-season.

He was given a two-match suspension (that was suspended) and fined $20,000 following the verbal tirade that was aimed at two St Kilda players during a practice match.

Clarkson was fuming after seeing his co-captain knocked out by St Kilda’s Jimmy Webster.

Webster copped a whopping seven-game suspension for the hit and both Clarkson and Webster later issued public apologies.

7NEWS chief AFL reporter Mitch Cleary said if Clarkson was found guilty of this latest allegation, the two match suspended sentence from the Webster incident would be invoked.

“So potentially (there will be) time for Clarkson out of the game this year,” Cleary said.

After the Webster incident, Clarkson said he would try to be better during emotional moments when watching games.

“I am disappointed that I allowed the emotion of the moment to envelope me and I should not have engaged with the St Kilda players,” he said at the time.

“This has been a significant reflective moment for me.

“My language was not used with any intent to vilify or marginalise, however through this incident I have begun to understand the impact of the use of casual language. I am fully committed to educating myself in this regard.

“In terms of my reaction to the incident involving Jy (Simpkin), I have been doing some work to understand why I respond in the manner I do, but also to develop strategies I can implement in these moments.”

Clarkson has also been at the centre of the Hawthorn racism saga, and mediation talks at the Human Rights Commission recently broke down.

That dispute is now likely to head to the Federal Court.
