First-year NSW Blues coach Michael Maguire and Queensland counterpart Billy Slater have shaken up their State of Origin squads for the 2024 opener, with mainstays axed on both sides.
Maguire has kicked off his tenure with the boom-or-bust call to axe incumbent captain James Tedesco while David Fifita will not return to play under Slater.
Tedesco has played a record 22 straight matches for NSW and is arguably the best fullback in their Origin history.

He had been under pressure to keep his spot since early last year but has been in a rich vein of form for the Roosters in recent weeks.
Maguire, though, has opted to reward Dylan Edwards for being among the NRL’s best fullbacks while winning three straight premierships at Penrith.
Fifita was enormous for Gold Coast on Sunday but the burst was not enough to earn selection for Queensland despite featuring in all three matches last year.
Slater does have options in the second row, with Jaydn Su’A in top form for St George Illawarra and J’maine Hopgood a strong chance of a debut.
Slater will officially name his side on Monday morning after a Sunday evening meeting with selectors Darren Lockyer and Gene Miles.
It is anticipated Queensland will take 16 players with Origin experience into the June 5 series opener.
Tom Dearden is expected to get the nod ahead of Ezra Mam as Cameron Munster’s replacement at No.6, after previously playing one game for the Maroons in 2022.
Slater must also choose between Selwyn Cobbo, Murray Taulagi and Xavier Coates for two wing spots, with the option to play one of the three on the bench.
In NSW, Maguire named Nicho Hynes at halfback despite concerns over a lingering calf issue while Jarome Luai has been recalled to partner him at five-eighth.
There is no room for Latrell Mitchell in the backline or on the bench, with Zac Lomax to instead debut on the wing and Joseph Aukuso-Suaalii at centre.
Cameron McInnes has also earned his debut at lock, while Haumole Olakau’atu will come off the bench. Spencer Leniu is the sixth Origin rookie picked.
Reece Robson has also won the race for the No.9 jersey ahead of Apisai Koroisau.
Brian To’o is on the wing alongside former Penrith star Stephen Crichton, while Isaah Yeo is the fifth Panther in the squad but may come off the bench.
Angus Crichton has also won his way back into the side as a starting left-edge second-rower, while Hudson Young will come off the bench with Matt Burton as 18th man.
