OAKLAND — The suspect in a June 29 fatal shooting was arrested last week, and is being extradited to the Bay Area to face charges, authorities said.
Paris William, 21, was charged on Sept. 9 with murder and carrying a loaded, concealed firearm in connection with the shooting death of 26-year-old Tyler Mitchell. William remained free with an active murder warrant until last week, when a U.S. Marshals task force tracked him down in Louisiana, authorities said.
Mitchell was shot and killed around 7 p.m. on June 29, as he unloaded groceries from his vehicle on the 8400 block of Edes Avenue in Oakland, authorities said. Witnesses and video surveillance helped police establish that his killer pulled up in a sedan, spoke briefly with Mitchell, then pulled out a pistol and shot him at least once. He was pronounced dead at a hospital later that night.
Mitchell’s girlfriend witnessed the event, but claimed not to recognize the shooter, authorities said. When police identified William as a suspect, investigators found that detail difficult to believe; they say that the woman and William had previously shared an address in Concord.
On top of identifying William from surveillance footage, police say that cellphone records place him near the shooting scene.
William has not yet had his first court appearance, and is being held without bail, court records show.
