Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei dies in hospital days after allegedly being set on fire by partner

Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei has died in hospital after allegedly being set on fire by her partner on Sunday.

The Ugandan athlete, who competed at Paris 2024, suffered burns to 80 per cent of her body when she was attacked in her house in the western Trans Nzoia County in Kenya, police said.

She battled in ICU but died, Uganda’s Olympic committee president Donald Rukare announced on Thursday.

“May her gentle soul rest in peace and we strongly condemn violence against women,” Rukare wrote.

“This was a cowardly and senseless act that has led to the loss of a great athlete. Her legacy will continue to endure.”

Cheptegei, 33, held her country’s marathon record and placed 44th in the event at the Olympics last month.

“On behalf of Team Kenya we extend our deepest condolences to the Ugandan sports community, family, and friends of Rebecca Cheptegei,” the Kenyan Olympic committee wrote.

“Rebecca’s talent, and perseverance as Uganda’s women’s marathon record-holder and a Paris 2024 Olympian will always be remembered and celebrated.

“Her untimely and tragic passing is a profound loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time as we honor her legacy and advocate for an end to gender-based violence. May her soul rest in peace.”
