Australian Oscar Piastri is hoping to be back in the points as F1 dives into the unknown this weekend.
Key points:
- The maiden F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix will be held this Sunday afternoon, AEDT
- Oscar Piastri is expecting an “interesting weekend” in the United States
- McLaren is 21 points ahead of Aston Martin in the battle for fourth
The maiden Las Vegas Grand Prix will be a new experience for all 20 drivers, as they navigate the famous streets in Nevada for the first time.
Piastri was unlucky last time out in Brazil, forced to be a lap down on his competitors after being an innocent bystander in a lap 1 crash.
McLaren is 21 points ahead of Aston Martin in the battle for fourth in the constructors’ championship.
F1’s prize money is handed out based on finishing positions in the constructors’ championship.
The exact amount each team receives is unclear, but the difference between each position on the tables is millions of dollars.
Piastri, who has been impressive in his rookie season, has played a secondary but vitally important role for McLaren in 2023.
The young Australian is hoping to finish this season strongly, taking momentum into 2024.
“I’m excited to be heading to Vegas and kicking off the last double header of the season,” he said.
“It should be a fun one, driving in a unique location. I can’t wait to see what it looks like.
“Vegas is another new track for me, but it’s new for everyone else, so it should make for an interesting weekend.
“The team have done an amazing job with the car this season, and I’m hoping to get back in the points.”
The race will be held on Sunday afternoon AEDT, followed by the final race of the season the next weekend.
