The suspect, identified as Muhammad Arif, was taken into custody by police upon the plane’s landing in Sydney. Arif disrupted the flight, claiming to possess explosives on board, which led to the decision to return the aircraft to Sydney Airport. The charges brought against him include making a false statement about a threat to damage an aircraft and failing to comply with cabin crew safety instructions. These charges can result in a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and a fine of over 15,000 Australian dollars ($7,300).
Arif, a resident of Canberra, refused to appear before a Sydney court via video link. His defense lawyer cited “serious mental issues” and his “not in the right state of mind” as reasons for his refusal to participate in the proceedings. The court postponed his case to assess his mental condition further.
During the flight, Arif reportedly drew attention by praying aloud. However, his behavior escalated around 30 minutes into the flight when he started pushing and shoving passengers. He implied possession of explosives, prompting Malaysia Airlines’ pilot to return to Sydney as a precautionary measure.
Passengers were confined on the plane for nearly three hours upon landing. The incident led to the cancellation of 32 domestic flights and delays of up to 90 minutes for other domestic flights at Sydney Airport.
Media reports suggest that Arif is a former Pakistani model and actor who studied at the National College of Arts in Lahore and had worked as an architect. He was also known for his appearances in Pakistani entertainment productions. Some of his acquaintances claim that he had developed extremist views over time.As investigations continue into this alarming incident, authorities aim to ensure the safety and security of air travel in the region.
