Prep roundup: Monta Vista, Aragon advance in CCS volleyball playoffs, Valley Christian girls golf dominates

Monta Vista 3, Christopher 1

Top-seeded Monta Vista overcame a slow start in the CCS Division II quarterfinals and defeated Christopher 23-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-16.

Kiana Mark had 22 kills, 11 digs and a solo block, while Chloe Chen had nine kills, 10 digs, four aces and three blocks for the Matadors. 

MV coach Nadia Lan shouted out freshman Tracy He, who played in her first varsity match. She said that once she and the team settled down in the second set, that it was “smooth sailing from there” as the team repeatedly set up their most prolific player. 

“Kiana Mark had an exceptional match,” Lan said. “She has been our best player all season and she demonstrates that tonight with her hitting performance.”

The Dons will play host to No. 4 Westmont on Thursday. 

Aragon 3, Willow Glen 0

The defending CCS Division II champions easily dispatched Willow Glen in the D-II quarterfinals, winning 25-8, 25-8, 25-14. Aragon coach Annette Trimble said Sophie Rubinstein had “a great game,” leading the Dons with eight kills an 15 digs. Aragon will travel to Valley Christian on Thursday for the semifinal. 

Soquel 3, Notre Dame-San Jose 1

Notre Dame’s stellar season ended in the CCS Division III quarterfinals at Soquel in a hard-fought 19-25; 23-25; 25-23; 25-27 loss. 

Senior captain Quinlan Jones, who is committed to play at Denver University, led the team with 26 kills and four aces. Senior Dylan Crooks chipped in 17 kills, and senior libero Rachel Greene had 15 digs.

Sophomore Orli Jones, Quinlan’s younger sister, played well in both the back and front rows. 

“Stayed in it until the end and almost pushed a 5th set. “Amazing game,” NDSJ coach Yelena Nash said. 

Other notes

In Division IV, No. 10 Notre Dame-Belmont shocked No. 2 Carmel 3-2 to advance to the the semifinals. NDB will play No. 3 Sacred Heart Prep, which defeated No. 6 Pacific Grove 3-0. … Valley Christian defeated Sobrato 3-0 in Division II. 

Girls golf

Valley Christian’s golf team broke the CCS championship record with a team score of 366. This was enough to win the program, which had four freshman among its six golfers, its fourth consecutive CCS title.  Tiffany Chang finished third in the individual competition, and Varsha Ramachandran came in fifth.
