Queen Camilla was notably absent as she was forced to pull out on doctors’ orders while recovering from a chest infection. But Duchess Sophie has stepped in for her, and took a spot next to Princess Kate. She is said to have dearly wanted to pay tribute in person to the nation’s fallen servicemen and women this weekend but doctors erred on the side of caution due to the need to stand outside for a prolonged period in the unpredictable weather.

Kate stood proudly on one of the balconies of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. At one moment she even took a moment to reflect and closed her eyes while remaining tight-lipped.

In January both the King, 75, and the Princess of Wales underwent operations and were subsequently diagnosed with cancer. This meant she was forced to step back from her duties to complete a course of chemotherapy.

Since completing the treatment and announcing she was cancer-free, Kate has been making a gradual return to public engagements, with her last high-profile appearance at Wimbledon in July. She also attended her first community engagement in Southport last month.

But her double appearance this weekend, having attended the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall last night, will be the first time she has carried out two consecutive events since last year.

Prince William, 42, recently admitted that it “has been the hardest year of my life” as he was forced to rush to both his wife and father’s aid at the start of the year following their shock diagnosis.

He was asked how the past 11 months have been for him, William said: “Honestly? It’s been dreadful. It’s probably been the hardest year in my life. So, trying to get through everything else and keep everything on track has been really difficult.”

In an interview with the UK media, he touched upon how proud he was of King Charles. Earlier this week he spent four days in Cape Town, South Africa for his  Earthshot prize campaign.

William said: “I’m so proud of my wife, I’m proud of my father, for handling the things that they have done. But from a personal family point of view, it’s been, yeah, it’s been brutal.”

William has not publicly spoken about how his wife or his father’s cancer diagnosis has affected him.
