During an interview with NDTV in 2010, Tata recalled an incident where he was advised by an industrialist to pay Rs 15 crore to a minister to get an undisclosed business deal. Tata told the interviewer that the fellow industrialist said, “You know, why don’t you pay the minister, you know that he wants 15 crore, no one has asked us for any amount of money…. you know, you people want the airline, don’t you? You want the airline, pay 15 crore what does it matter to you.”
Later in the viral interview, when Ratan Tata was asked about how to avoid corruption, he emphasized the importance of self-regulation in combating corrupt practices. “It has to be self-regulating….You will never understand that, we just don’t do that… I want to go bed at night feeling that I have unsuccumbed,” Tata told the industrialist.
Ratan Tata emphasized that he has always avoided engaging in corrupt practices because he wants to go to bed each night knowing he has not succumbed to unethical behavior. He stated that he has never participated in corrupt practices, not even for a mining licence showcasing his commitment to integrity in business dealings.
