Ratan Tata’s official biographer, Thomas Mathew, discussed Tata’s first serious love during his time in California in 1960. In an interview with NDTV, Mathew highlighted how deeply he fell in love with the woman, Caroline Jones.
Despite their relationship, Ratan Tata returned to India when his mother fell ill. Jones was reluctant to move to India due to global tensions at the time, which ultimately led to the end of their love story. This decision also highlighted Ratan Tata’s strong concern for his family, which he prioritized over love.
Thomas Mathew is also a former IAS officer who had worked with leaders such as President Pranab Mukherjee. He met Ratan Tata in the mid-90s and described Tata’s dashing appearance, noting his height and hazel eyes. Mathew recalled Tata’s humility despite his magnetic presence.
Mathew mentioned that Ratan Tata initially wanted to pursue Mechanical Engineering at Cornell University but later switched to Architecture. He had a passion for flying aircraft and would sometimes thrill his colleagues by cutting the engine off midair.
