Real Madrid legend Luka Modric wants a meeting with the club after the Champions League semifinals and is even considering retirement following this summer’s European Championships according to OK Diario director Eduardo Inda, who reported this information during an appearance on El Chiringuito where he cited anonymous sources.
Modric has started Madrid’s last two matches against FC Barcelona and Real Sociedad in La Liga, and his head coach Carlo Ancelotti stated after the latter victory that “of course” the Croat also had strong chances of beginning Tuesday’s Champions League last four first leg against Bayern Munich.
This isn’t expected to happen, however, with Ancelotti instead going for a double pivot made up of Eduardo Camavinga and Toni Kroos in the Allianz Arena.
And according to Inda, Modric wants to hold talks about his future with president Florentino Perez and the board following the clash, at a time when there are just two months left to run on his contract.
Inda says that the club has already decided this season will be Modric’s last at the Bernabeu, yet both the player and his family want to continue in the Spanish capital where they are “very adapted” and “tremendously happy”.
Reports from the likes of The Athletic earlier in 2024 explained that Ancelotti had offered Modric a place on his coaching staff.
According to Inda, however, Modric’s “relationship with Carletto is not so good because the Italian asked him not to go to Saudi Arabia” where a big money offer was waiting for him in 2023 according to AS.
“Modric quit from going to Saudi Arabia and Ancelotti promised him a lot of minutes, but he didn’t expect to be the 16th player.
“Modric is going to have offers to go to Saudi Arabia, to the United States,” Inda said, before adding again that “the family is happy in Madrid and is also considering possible retirement after the European Championship,” which would allow them to stay in Spain even if Modric doesn’t continue with a club where he has been since 2012.
For now Modric will focus on trying to win a sixth Champions League and, along with the likes of Dani Carvajal and Nacho, level another Madrid icon in Paco Gento as the all-time greatest winner of the European Cup.
Before the Wembley final on June 1, though, providing Madrid gets past Bayern Munich, the 38-year-old wants his fate decided.
