Remote workers often combine business and personal time: Survey

(NewsNation) — Amazon’s demand that its workers return to the office full time has renewed questions about the advantages and challenges of remote work – and how workers have blurred the lines between work time and personal time.

Some hints may be found in a survey of remote workers conducted by the do-it-yourself survey app SurveyMonkey.

76% of those responding said they use their personal devices for work tasks, and 39% said they use work devices for personal tasks. And nearly half said they multitask during a work call or do household chores during work time.

In another question about work/life balance:

  • 28% said they “always or sometimes” are asked to do work while on vacation or taking time off
  • 54% said they check their work email during time off
  • 32% said it is “very or somewhat difficult” to disconnect from work while on vacation
  • 32% took a “quiet vacation” – time off without notifying their employers or requesting paid time off

When it comes to returning to the office, the responses were a mix of positive and negative:

  • 35% say they miss connecting with coworkers
  • 19% admit they miss face-to-face communication
  • 69% say they’re more productive working remotely
  • 48% believe that return-to-office mandates are about micromanaging workers

The August survey of more than 3,000 full-time workers in the U.S. has a one percent margin of error.
