Retrospekt Celebrates Barbie’s 65th Birthday With New Film Cameras

Milwaukee-based analog photography company Retrospekt has teamed up with Mattel again, restocking the popular Malibu Barbie Polaroid instant camera and releasing a brand-new line of Barbie-themed 35mm film cameras.

Arriving just in time for Barbie’s 65th anniversary, the new Malibu Barbie FC-11 35mm Film Camera is a fixed-focus camera with a built-in flash that, as Retrospekt puts it, “makes capturing sun-soaked memories a breeze.” The camera sports a bubblegum pink body, palm tree graphics, and the iconic Barbie logo.

A person with long blonde hair, wearing pink checkered clothing, is holding a pink Barbie-themed camera. The person's fingernails are painted red and they are sitting on a white blanket outdoors. The background includes green grass and a glimpse of a pink bag.

The camera has a 31mm f/9 lens, shoots at 1/120s, and is powered by a single AAA battery.

Alongside the FC-11 camera is a new Malibu Barbie 35mm Camera Bag. This follows the style established by the existing Malibu Barbie Polaroid bag and features a yellow and pink color-block style.

“With its retro flair and practical design, this bag is the ideal companion to the FC-11 camera,” Retrospekt says.

Two hands hold colorful disposable cameras against a bright blue sky. The left blue camera features a cartoon character with "Ken" on it, while the right pink camera features a cartoon character with "Barbie" on it. Both cameras are decorated with stars and playful designs.

Retrospekt is also known for what it calls “Simple-use 35mm film cameras,” which are affordable film cameras that look like disposable cameras. However, unlike disposable, single-use cameras, the “simple-use” 35mm cameras can be replenished with new film after the included roll is spent. Retrospekt’s new Barbie and Ken Simple-use 35mm Film Camera double pack comes with two cameras; each pre-loaded with 27 exposures of ISO 400 film.

The Barbie-themed camera is, unsurprisingly, pink. The second camera, the Ken camera, has a cool blue colorway. Both cameras feature 80s-inspired graphics with bold patterns.

“It’s the perfect set for friends looking to capture their summer escapades together, offering a his-and-hers experience that’s pure Barbie magic,” Retrospekt explains.

As mentioned, the Retrospekt Malibu Barbie Polaroid instant camera, first released in 2021, is also back in production as part of this expanded collaboration. The pink and yellow Polaroid 600 has Barbie graphics and ships with custom Barbie stickers that photographers can put on their cameras to give it personalized charm.

Retrospekt also offers a different Barbie Throwback Polaroid 600, this one with a more modern Barbie style and a flamingo pink, purple, and green design.

Both Polaroid 600 Barbie cameras are available now for $179, and the Polaroid bag, whether in Malibu Barbie or Barbie Throwback style, is $35.

A vibrant collage features various people enjoying colorful, retro-inspired cameras labeled "Barbie" on a sunny day. One person holds a pink camera, another a blue one. Inset images highlight the stylish designs, and a Barbie logo is prominently displayed in the center.

The new Malibu Barbie Retrospekt FC-11 35mm film camera is $59, while the Barbie and Ken Simple-Use Double Pack is $49.
