Getting down on the ground, Irwin said, “Look at this big boy!”
“Look at the size of him,” he added, holding his hand out before the snake lunged forward towards him.
Irwin reared back and managed to get out of the way but was clearly shaken by the near-miss.
“Gee, that gets the heart rate up – he missed me by that much!” Irwin said nervously.
A female could be heard in the background letting out a big gasp and saying “Geez!” as Irwin bolted back away from the snake.
“He’s a bit worked up because he’s on the road,” the 19-year-old continued.
“Man, did you see how close he was to my face?
“You would’ve felt that!”
Irwin then made a move to pick the python up before it jerked towards him again.
Filming continued, and at one point the snake wrapped itself around the teenager’s arm.
“He’s real grumpy, this is gonna be a little bit tricky here,” Irwin said, before managing to pick the snake up by the tail.
“He’s really keen on biting me.
“What a gorgeous snake, he’s big, he’s not venomous but they have got really big teeth and head, they’re designed to constrict”.
As Irwin held the snake up, it began winding itself around his raised arm.
“He’s got a good grip there, I’ve lost complete blood flow to my hand, it’s completely blue, and I have no feeling left in my hand,” Irwin said.
The snake eventually loosened its grip, allowing Irwin to take the reptile to his car.
The next day Irwin released the snake into bushland well away from the road.
“Alright, job well done!” he said as he released the snake.
“See ya!”
While fans loved Irwin’s work in moving the python to a safer spot, they were also terrified by the hair-raising moment when it lunged towards his face.
“This is precarious yet hiss-terical !😂 all at the same time,” one fan wrote.
“Thank you for helping snakey dude slither to safety.”
“Attempted biting, constricting the hand making it blue, Robert is still calm and excited about the snake, would probably thank it if he lost his hand anyways,” wrote another.
“I’m here for it.”
Many could see the similarities between Robert and his father, the late Steve Irwin.
“I think all of us who watched and loved your dad are thinking the same thing, this clip is like going back in time for us,” one follower said.
“Dude you are killing us with these like-father like-son bits 😭” a second wrote.
“The laugh when you almost got bit, that’s definitely Steve right there!” said a third.
Nerve-racking moments
It’s not the first time Robert Irwin has had a nerve-racking wildlife encounter.
In February 2022, the popular wildlife conservationist had to run for his life after a 350km crocodile ran for him instead of the bait on offer.
“Bail, bail, bail, bail, bail, bail,” he said as he ran across Australia Zoo’s Crocoseum exhibit in a heart-stopping moment.
In another incident, he was bitten on the face while lifting another carpet python.
Irwin was handling the snake during filming when it lunged towards him, drawing blood.
Posting the footage on Instagram, the clip then cut to an eerily similar video of Steve Irwin with the same bloody face wounds from an attack.
“After a snake rescue with this cheeky carpet python while filming for Crikey! It’s the Irwins, it brought back fun memories of a very similar situation that happened decades before in one of the original crocodile hunter documentaries,” Irwin captioned the post.
“Maybe it was her way of saying ‘thanks’ for being rescued!”
