Samsung unveiled new monitors, including fresh Odyssey series OLED displays with AI upscaling.
The larger of Samsung’s two new Odyssey models, the G8, is the headline act. The Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 is Samsung’s first flat 32-inch 4K OLED panel designed for gaming. Given that it’s built with gamers in mind, the monitor prioritizes refresh rate and responsiveness, delivering a 240Hz refresh rate and 0.03s gray-to-gray response time.
The OLED G6, on the other hand, is a 27-inch QHD (2,560 x 1,440) resolution monitor with a 360Hz refresh rate, a bit swifter than its larger sibling.
Both monitors sport a 16:9 aspect ratio and feature Samsung’s OLED Safeguard+ technology, a new proprietary defense against burn-in. This technology, a first of its kind, applies a pulsating heat pipe to the monitor. This heat is paired with a dynamic cooling system that evaporates and condenses a coolant to diffuse heat five times more effectively than the older graphite sheet method. The display also detects static images, like toolbars and logos, and reduces their brightness to reduce the risk of burn-in.
Samsung says its new OLED displays support 1.07 billion colors, covering 99% of the DCI-P3 color gamut with HDR10. Speaking of HDR, the monitor supports it, although its maximum brightness is just 250 nits, which is not very far into HDR territory.
Another trick up the Odyssey’s sleeve is Samsung’s NQ8 AI Gen3 processor. This is the first time a Samsung OLED gaming monitor has included this feature, and it upscales content to nearly 4K resolution when using the Samsung Gaming Hub.
The Odyssey OLED G8 is available to preorder for $1,500 while the G6 is $900.
Samsung also announced new Smart Monitor and ViewFinity series products. The new Smart Monitor series displays range from 27 to 43 inches, with the M80D as the top-end option. The 32-inch panel has a 60Hz refresh rate, 4K resolution, and 400 nits maximum brightness. It also features 4K upscaling technology, unlike the M70D and M50D monitors. The M80D, the highest-end of the new Smart Monitor series, is $700.
The new ViewFinity displays, optimized for creative professionals, come in S6, S7, and S8 models. The high-end ViewFinity S8 series includes the S80UD and S80D displays. They both come in 27- and 32-inch sizes, with the smaller one sporting an IPS display and the larger one opting for VA type. Both models top out at 350 nits and 4K resolution, and cover 99% of the sRGB color space. The 27-inch S80UD is $450, while the 32-inch version is $500.
