Selena Gomez Just Got the Trendiest Haircut of the Season—See the Photos

The flippy bob is on fire this season. It seems like every day, a new celeb shows up wearing their hair in the collarbone-length, flipped-out short style: Kim Kardashian, Saweetie, Shania Twain, and now, Selena Gomez!

Gomez, who has mostly been wearing her hair long as of late, was back to short hair for the 2024 Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles. Instead of the just-past-shoulder-length waves we saw her in just a few days ago while promoting her new movie Emilia Pérez, the star hit the gala red carpet in a flipped-out bob, adding yet another high-profile name to the list of stars who have embraced the 90s-does-60s vibes of this style.

Gomez’s flippy bob was a fun contrast to her blue velvet Alaïa halter gown with a peekaboo leather bra, adding a flirty touch to the more formal, structured dress. Hairstylist Marissa Marino, who often works with Gomez, parted the star’s hair slightly to the side, blew it out straight, and slicked it down, tucking both front sections behind her ears and flipping the ends out in upturned wings that just barely brushed her collarbones. We particularly love how well the cut plays with her oversized earrings; the tucked-back sections give them space to shine but they also blend into her hair in the coolest way. Glam-wise, Gomez kept it pretty simple. Makeup artist Hung Vanngo applied a shimmery shadow to Gomez’s lids and defined her eyes with subtly winged-out black liner, then applied a peachy pink lip color to match her blush.

If you’re not convinced that the flippy bob is here to stay, Gomez’s co-sign of the look means it will probably only get bigger and more popular from here. It may just be time to call your stylist and think about a fresh, flipped-out chop for the fall.
