SAN MATEO COUNTY — A Half Moon Bay man who physically abused a woman and broke her cell phone in front of her has been arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and robbery, according to authorities.
Deputies with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported domestic disturbance around 7 p.m. Thursday on Iris Lane in unincorporated Half Moon Bay, according to a statement sent Friday. The suspect fled on foot before deputies arrived, but they eventually located and arrested the 29-year-old man.
The investigation revealed that the night before, on Wednesday, the victim attempted to end a relationship with the man. During the breakup, the man struck the woman in the head with his hat, authorities said in a news release Friday, causing pain that lasted about 24 hours.
On Thursday, the man told the woman to drive him to a location. While in the vehicle, he became upset and broke her car’s stereo, according to the sheriff’s office. They later returned home and the man took her cell phone and threw her onto a bed before pinning her down. He briefly left the home, still in possession of her phone.
When he returned, authorities said, he smashed and broke the phone on the concrete outside the home. While speaking to deputies, the woman reported prior physical abuse. She was granted an Emergency Protection Order against the man.
The man was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, robbery, false imprisonment and vandalism of an object worth more than $400.
