Sir Pre-Fall 2024 – WWD

Nikki Campbell and Sophie Coote’s pre-fall collection for Sir proved the Australian, minimalist-minded brand isn’t just a resort and transeasonal label.

Inspired by a trip to London in May, the duo leaned into the ‘90s minimalist spirit to expand their offering from swimwear, cover-ups and chic summer dressing with new leatherette and outerwear layers.

“The collection is inspired by that early ’90s London club culture, sort of that vintage turned into the club at nighttime, like the sign of the times where creatives like a young Alexander McQueen and artists like Björk frequented at that time,” Coote said. During their trip, the duo was inspired by London’s galleries, club scene, vintage stores and print design libraries — all of which their pre-fall collection subtly touched on, with modern twists.

Known for their minimalist shapes with subtle twists, colorblocking; “deconstruction” a la falling-off-the-shoulder lingerie layer and transparencies were key ideas this season. For instance, taking their well-known cutout lace Aries dress and turning it into a selection of separates (midnight hued little tops with mid- and full-length elasticated waistband slip skirts) or a new black gown with corset bodice made up of a combination of lace, silk satin and silk chiffon. The idea extended into sheer black lace layers — a great little ‘90s cardigan or corsetry-inspired midi skirt — designed to be worn as “sexy or confidently as you want,” Campbell said.

Other highlights included colorblocked layers, like an electric orange layered scuba set or airy layered slip in pale green and baby blue, or minimalist tailoring. Pushing into fall layers, there were new velvet mesh numbers, patent leatherette skirts, heavier weight fully fashioned knits (great in a bright orange), and double-face outerwear that leaned into the idea of ‘90s grunge.
