Mary Kom’s decision to retire from boxing comes after International Boxing Association’s (IBA) ruling of athletes to fight till 40 at top level.
Dibrugarh: Six-time World Champion MC Mary Kom has been forced to draw curtains to her illustrious career as the International Boxing Association’s (IBA) rules only allows boxers (male or female) to fight till the age of 40 at top level. Mary Kom is currently 41. Despite her age, Mary Kom stil has the hunger to fight at the top level but with IBA rules coming in between, the legendary boxer had nothing to do but to stop.
“I have the hunger still but unfortunately because of the age limit it is over I cannot compete in any competition. I want to play more but I am being forced to quit (due to the age limit). I have to retire. I have achieved everything in my life,” Mary Kom said during an event.
A bronze medal winner at the 2012 London Olympics, Mary Kom is the only female boxer in history to clinch six world titles. She is also a five-time Asian champion and the first female boxer from India to win a gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games.
