MUMBAI: Snubbed by the national selectors from the 15-man squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup in India which was announced on Tuesday, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal will turn out for Kent for what would be his maiden stint in County cricket, TOI has learnt.
“The Kent County Cricket Club will make an official announcement regarding this development soon. Chahal will play three four-day games for them. The BCCI has granted NOC to him to play County cricket. Should he be a requirement for the India team, Chahal will join the national squad immediately,” said a source in the BCCI.
Chahal has only played 2 ODIs in 2023 and has picked up 3 wickets. The 33-year-old has taken 121 wickets in 72 ODIs @27.13, and 96 scalps in 80 T20Is @25.09. Speaking to TOI, Chahal hoped it won’t be too long before he would be back in the Indian team. “Naturally, it is very disappointing to miss out any selection for India. As a cricketer we must accept that some things don’t always go our way. I must continue to try my best and hopefully my performances will justify selection again for India,” Chahal told this paper.
Chahal was grateful to the CEO of Zestige Private Healthcare, Brindon Bagirathan, who is well-connected in the cricket world as he helped Chahal secure the county opportunity, “Rahul Dravid Sir speaks so highly of his time in County cricket. I really wanted to play (in County cricket). I cannot explain how grateful I am of my good friend Brindon who helped me in such short notice,” said the leggie.
WPL 2 likely to be in home and away format in Feb-March
The second edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is likely to be played in a home and away format in February-March next year. The WPL’s inaugural edition was held from March 4-26 in Mumbai at two venues-the Brabourne Stadium and the DY Patil Stadium.
In April, the BCCI secretary Jay Shah had told reporters that the Board was considering switching the WPL to a home-and-away format in the Diwali window. However, with all the Aussie and other top players of the world busy with the Women’s Big Bash League around that time, it’s near impossible to hold the WPL in that window.
Gaffaney, Illingworth to stand for India-Pak tie
Australia’s Chris Gaffaney and England’s Richard Illingworth will be the on-field umpires for the big-ticket India versus Pakistan Asia Cup Super 4 clash at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on September 10, while ex-Australia opener David Boon will be the match referee for the game.
