Some frozen waffles at major retailers recalled over listeria risk

(NewsNation) — Frozen waffles sold at major retailers across the U.S. and Canada have been recalled after possible listeria contamination.

Illinois-based TreeHouse Foods, LLC voluntarily issued the recall Friday after doing routine testing at one of its 26 manufacturing facilities.

Listeria is a foodborne bacteria that can cause fever, chills, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhea after eating contaminated food. More serious symptoms can include headache, stiff neck and loss of balance.

Some of the grocery chains that carry the waffles are Walmart, Target, Aldi’s, Publix, H-E-B, Food Lion, Dollar General and more. Store brand names included in the recall are Best Choice, Good & Gather, Great Value and Simple Truth.

No illnesses have been reported, but customers should check the labels on the product boxes and dispose of them or return to the place of purchase for a refund. Customers should cross-check the retail UPC, lot code and best by date with TreeHouse Food’s list of recalled products.

All affected waffle brands are listed on TreeHouse Food’s website. Consumers with questions may also contact the company at 800-596-2903.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration also posted the safety alert online. The FDA posts companies’ announcements involving recalls or safety alerts as a courtesy.
