Sony has released new high-capacity Tough CFexpress Type B cards in 240GB and 480GB capacities. These cards promise swift speeds and high performance for photographers and videographers using the latest and greatest Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, and Panasonic cameras.
The larger 480GB CFexpress Type B Tough Memory Card (CEB-G480T) promises a maximum read speed of 1,850 MB/s and a max write speed of 1,750 MB/s. The smaller 240GB card (CEB-G240T) offers nearly the same speeds, with the same read speed and a slightly slower maximum write speed of 1,600 MB/s.
“Thanks to its fast write speed, it goes great with high-resolution cameras,” Sony says of its new Tough CFexpress Type B memory cards. “The CEB-G series is designed for professional photographers, videographers, and enthusiasts looking to boost workflows with its fast speed and exceptional reliability.”
When used in conjunction with Sony’s MRW-G1 CFexpress Type B card reader, sold separately, users can use Sony’s Media Scan Utility to monitor their Tough cards’ condition and storage limit. Memory Card File Rescue software for Sony customers can also help users recover accidentally deleted files.
The new CEB-G cards promise to live up to the “Sony Tough” moniker. The cards have five times greater strength against drops and three times greater bendability than the CFexpress Type B standard. The cards also resist extreme temperatures, X-rays, electrostatic, and ultraviolet radiation (sunlight).
The upgraded Sony CFexpress Type B Tough memory cards are expected to arrive in stores in May. The 240GB version will cost $200 ($275 CAD), while the larger and faster 480GB card will retail for $320 ($440 CAD). Although they are not yet available to order through B&H, prospective customers can sign up to be notified through the links above.
The new cards join existing Sony Tough CFexpress Type B memory cards, including the 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB CEB-G series cards that offer 1,700 MB/s read and 1,480 MB/s write speed, respectively. These slightly slower cards are available now at discounted prices of $138, $228, and $348, respectively.
For users who require way more capacity and can afford high prices, Sony also offers 960GB and 1,920GB CFexpress Type B Tough memory cards for $998 and $1,998, respectively. These cards are both VPG-400 certified and are built with professional video applications in mind.
The new Tough cards do not include VPG-400 certification, and Sony does not specify a guaranteed minimum write speed. However, Sony does promise that they are built with videographers in mind, so they may still work well within various hybrid workflows.
