The RG Kar postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly rapes and murdered on August 9. Since then, there have been widespread protests across the country demanding justice.
New Delhi: Sourav Ganguly has issued a clarification after his comments on the RG Kar trainee doctor’s alleged rape and murder sparked controversy among the netizens and few other sections of the society. Joining the bandwagon of cricketing celebrities condemning the heinous crime, the former India captain said he was deeply shaken by the incident being a father of a daughter.
Backing his state West Bengal as one of the safest places in the country, Ganguly also stated that it is unfair to judge the entire system based on a single incident. “Very unfortunate. Strict action should be taken. This incident is terrible… Really really scary… Everything is possible everywhere. So security system, CCTV cameras should be prepared accordingly. Strict action should be taken.
“I don’t think everything should be judged on an isolated incident. There is no room to think that everything or everyone is not safe for this. Such accidents happen all over the world. So it is wrong to think that girls are not safe. Not only in West Bengal, but everywhere in India, women are safe. Where we live is the best place. One should not judge by one incident,” the former BCCI president had said.

You can’t justify by saying that #kolkatadoctor death can happen anywhere in the world.

However, his comments didn’t go well on social media as the 51-year-old faced severe criticism. However, on Sunday, Ganguly clarified that his remarks were misinterpreted. “Last Sunday I spoke about this. I don’t know how my statement was interpreted,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
“This is a terrible incident. The culprits should be punished in such a way that no one can do anything like this in the future. The investigation is going on. I hope the culprit will be identified and punished. The way people are protesting, if this incident happened anywhere in the world, this is how people would have roared,” he explained.
