‘Spineless’ men flee explosion at Wendouree, near Ballarat, as popular Victorian gym Infinite MMA goes up in flames

A fire that ripped through a popular gym at Wendouree, near Ballarat, late last month has prompted a police appeal for information.

No one was inside during the explosion at Infinite MMA on Howitt St on May 25, which was damaged in the incident.

Two men forced entry into the building about 3.20am and “poured accelerant inside, at the front of the building, and in the carpark, before lighting it,” Victoria Police said.

It sparked a large fire in the reception area.

Two men wearing hoodies were captured on CCTV fleeing east on Howitt St.

“An explosion was deliberately set off out the front of the gym,” Infinite MMA said in a statement last Monday.

“Two jerry cans of petrol along with our gas meter were set alight, which caused the explosion.

“The fire was contained to the front area of the building; however, there is extensive smoke damage throughout, including in the ceiling and ventilation.”

The gym called the alleged arson attack “spineless” and confirmed the business would prevail despite the incident.

“Most of our senior staff and students were in Sydney when the attack occurred, and others were preparing for fights in Melbourne which were scheduled for the following day,” it said.

“We want to let everyone know that we are OK. We are a strong and resilient community.

“This attack was petty and spineless. It has not intimidated us or broken our spirit. It has not taken our dignity or worth. Our future is bright.”

Police have released images of the suspects as they continue to probe the fire.

But only one — of a man described as being of tall, stocky build and wearing a hoodie, black gloves, shorts and Nike runners — was clear enough for a police description.
