Ratan Naval Tata, Chairman Emeritus of one of the largest conglomerates, Tata Sons passed away at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai late Wednesday night. He was 86. Ratan Tata was not only a global business leader but also a philanthropist who helped each sector to serve humanity.

Ratan Tata was born on December 28, 1937. He graduated in Architecture from Cornell University in 1962.  Later, he joined the Advanced Management Programme from Harvard Business School. Ratan Tata’s father Naval Tata was a successful businessman while Ratan Tata’s mother, Sooni Tata was a homemaker.

Ratan Tata joined as an assistant in Tata Group in 1962. He took a six-month training from Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company ( now Tata Steel) at Jamshedpur.

After serving many companies, he was appointed as Director In-charge of National Radio and Electronics Company in 1971.

Later, in 1981, he was appointed as President of other holding companies of Tata Industries. He was a think tank and group strategist and was responsible for taking out new initiatives in technology-based businesses. 

He served as President of Tata Sons from 1991 to December 28, 2012. During his tenure, he spearheaded Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Power, Tata Consultancy Services. Tata Global Beverages, Tata Chemicals, Indian hotels, Tata Teleservices  and other companies of the group.

Ratan Tata was also associated with other prestigious global organisations. He was a member of the International Advisory Board of Mitsubishi Corporation and JP Morgan Chase.

Ratan Tata was conferred with the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.

Rata Tata’s Achievements-

Tata Motors acquired Jaguar-Land Rover (JLR) from Ford Motors in 2008.

Ratan Tata had led the acquisition of Corus by Tata Steel in 2007.

Ratan Tata’s contribution as Philanthropist-

Ratan Tata had also made contributions for humanity and the society. Under his leadership, Tata Trust and Tata Foundation contributed in education, health, rural development and technical innovation sectors.

Education-

Ratan Tata was of the view that education is key to success. He came forward to start schools, institutions across teh country. Several students were benefitted with scholarships that were initiated by the group’s trust.

Health-

Ratan Tata also contributed in constructions of hospital and cancer research institutes.
