First time beginning a workout routine? Yes, it can be a bit daunting or for some not really a big deal.  When you start out a workout or fitness routine, there will be an array of tips, workout options, diet plans, and conflicting advice can feel overwhelming. What to do what not to do, what will fit the body and what will not, it is all a dilemma.  “As a beginner, navigating a fitness journey can get confusing, most people take it as ‘dieting’ where they only think of quitting several food habits and perspiring in hard workout sessions. As a result, most people give up too quickly too” says Miten Kakaiya, Fitness, and Wellness Coach at Miten Says Fitness. “With the right approach and mindset, you can set yourself up for success” he adds.

Here are some practical tips to help you kick-start your fitness journey.

STEP-BY-STEP ROUTINE FOR FIRST TIMERS

  1. Setting your goals: Before starting any fitness journey, it’s important to establish clear and achievable goals. Whether you aim to lose weight, build muscles, or simply improve your health, having specific objectives will guide your journey and keep you motivated. “Break down your long-term fitness goals into short-term achievable milestones, this makes it easier to work on and celebrate along the way,” says Miten.
  2. Planning your workouts: As a beginner, you need not get into extreme workout routines. Create a workout schedule that fits your lifestyle and commitments, making it easier to stick to in the long run. Aim for a mix of cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and flexibility work to achieve a well-rounded fitness routine. “If you are new to exercise, it’s best to start slow. Go for smaller workout sessions, and gradually increase the intensity, and duration as your fitness improves’ adds Miten.
  3. Meal Planning and Nutrition: Fueling your body with the right nutrients is crucial for supporting your fitness goals. Focus on consuming nutritionally dense and balanced meals that suit your taste palate and food habits. Avoid processed foods, snacking, or alcohol as these can hinder your progress and leave you feeling sluggish. Make healthy food choices, no matter where you are. “Make healthy eating accessible and convenient by constructing a meal plan or taking it from a fitness coach who understands your nutrition needs and fitness goals,” says Miten.
  4. Prioritising Recovery: Most beginners don’t understand the concept of muscle recovery and how important it can be. Rest and recovery are just as important as exercise when it comes to achieving your fitness goals. Listen to your body and prioritize adequate sleep, hydration, and stress management to support optimal recovery. “Incorporate muscle relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, etc, or at least take a day’s break every week to let your body recover from all the hard work,” says Miten.
  5. Stay consistent and positive: Fitness is a journey and not a destination. Stay patient, and consistent, and most importantly, stay positive throughout the journey. Show up for yourself each day and build discipline around your fitness journey. When you are low, go for smaller workout sessions, when you feel energy, get into an energetic workout. Surround yourself with a supportive community of like-minded individuals who can cheer you on and hold you accountable.

Getting started with your fitness journey can be overwhelming but with the right approach, it can also be incredibly rewarding. All you need to do is make the right choices that work for you and build a sustainable lifestyle around it. Remember to be patient with yourself and enjoy the process of becoming the best version of yourself!
